Get set for an avant-pop musical extravaganza

Take a respected indie band, throw in a string quartet, mathematics, graphic art and Bach, and what do you get? An Eternal Golden Braid, a multimedia light, space and sound extravaganza taking place next year as part of the 37th Hong Kong Arts Festival.

The show, commissioned by the Arts Festival, involves local musical duo Primary Shapes, a band that has captivated fans for the past 10 years with its electronic tunes and live performances that feature stunning audio-visual effects.

It is a diverse and creative show that defies the usual categorisations of artistic genres.

Tisa Ho, executive director of the festival, said shows like this reflected the diversity of the Hong Kong arts scene and the maturity of local audiences.

'The arts here are very diverse and wide-ranging, and audiences recognise quality,' she said.

'The classics are well loved, and perhaps we don't get those often enough in Hong Kong, but at the same time, we have audiences who are quite adventurous and ready to try something new - this year, we are taking them to some new places.'

In next year's show, the music duo singer-composer Tang Chi-wai and sound designer-writer Yuen Cheuk-wa team up with a string quartet and a team of creative designers and artists to create a theatrical music concert. The concert, part of the ExxonMobil Vision series, is inspired by Douglas Hofstadter's Pulitzer prize-winning book on mathematics, graphic art and music: Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid.

Primary Shapes will lead audiences through an avant-pop musical experience with stunning light and graphic effects.

The performance takes place next year on February21 and 22 at 8.30pm in the Drama Theatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
