Data-collecting satellite launched

The mainland yesterday launched a remote-sensing satellite, Yaogan V, from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in Shanxi . The satellite will be used for data collection on land resources, environmental surveillance and protection, urban planning, crop-yield estimates, disaster prevention and reduction, and space science experiments, Xinhua said. Biodegradable bags to go on sale

The mainland plans to promote the use of biodegradable plastic garbage bags, first introduced during the Beijing Olympics. The bags are made from organic substances and dissolve naturally after a month of exposure. They will be on sale from next year. Staff Reporter
