A Christmas tree with a clear difference

With city malls awash with Christmas trees, one Causeway Bay mall has erected a tree with a difference to entice shoppers.

The seven-metre-tall Christmas tree at wtc more shopping mall is made of panes of glass that have been illustrated by renowned Korean glass-painter Nanan. The artist has been working on-site since December 4, and she will continue to paint the mall's windows, mirrors and other glass surfaces for four hours a day until Christmas Eve.

Famous for her soft, clean lines, Nanan has gained a reputation for dressing windows and glass surfaces in Asia and around the world. Her work decorates display windows, magazines, clothing and even the MTV logo.

As a child, Nanan loved drawing. The only difference was the canvas she worked on. Instead of paper, she drew on rolls of used film her father brought home from work. The translucent film allowed light to pass through creating interesting shifts of colour. But she says she never imagined these early artistic experiments would stick with her and become her career.

Five years ago, after having some drinks, Nanan and her friends started doodling on a glass window with markers. The next day, Nanna was captivated by the collaboration.

After seeing Hong Kong's glass-lined skyscrapers, the young Korean artist finds it hard to hide her excitement.

'It would be wonderful to have an entire district covered with my drawings!' she says.

Nanan is at wtc more shopping mall, Causeway Bay, from 1pm to 5pm daily until Christmas Eve.
