The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, said yesterday the old age allowance would be increased to HK$1,000 from January 1. The increase was approved by the Legislative Council this month. Mr Cheung said the Social Welfare Department would process all 480,000 eligible cases as quickly as practicable so the elderly could receive the increased amount before the Lunar New Year.
