Observatory predicts cold snap over coming days
The Observatory issued the cold weather warning at 4.20pm yesterday, predicting chilly temperatures over the next few days, including New Year's Day and Friday, as the result of a cold winter monsoon. Minimum temperatures in urban areas today will be about 12 degrees Celsius, with temperatures in the New Territories a couple of degrees lower. The Social Welfare Department issued a statement reminding the elderly to take precautions. It also encouraged relatives, friends and neighbours to look out for the elderly, especially those living alone. People requiring assistance can call the department's hotline, 2343 2255.
Man, 68, falls to his death
A 68-year-old man was killed when he fell from the sixth floor of a building in Kam Ping Street, North Point, at about 2pm while repairing a damaged water pipe. He was taken to Eastern Hospital, where he was declared dead two hours later.
Thief at YMCA jailed three years
Electrician Wong Man-kwong, 52, was jailed for three years for repeatedly stealing and trying to steal valuables from travellers staying at the YMCA in Tsim Sha Tsui between April 2006 and August this year. The District Court heard Wong was familiar with the interior of the guest house after working at its sister YWCA hostel. He admitted breaking into rooms.
Three hurt in bus accident
Three people were hurt at 9.30am when a bus heading towards Yuen Long stopped on Castle Peak Road and a minibus and light goods vehicle failed to stop in time. The injured, passengers on the minibus, were taken to Pok Oi Hospital in stable condition.

No one won the first prize in last night's draw. The numbers were 4, 8, 18, 29, 40 and 47. The extra number was 9. Five tickets each won second prize of HK$272,815. Third prize paid HK$58,670.
