New NYK vehicle service launched
A NEW South American joint car-truck carrier service by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) and Norwegian Specialised Autocarriers (NOSAC) has started calling at the United States port of Baltimore.
South America is one of the fastest growing trade lanes in the world, and the NYK-NOSAC service planned to fill the region's growing need for a regular, dedicated pure car-truck carrier service that could also handle roll-on-roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargoes, company officials said.
''More countries will follow the market-opening policy already implemented by Chile and strengthened by the passing of NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement],'' said NOSAC president Jan Eyvin Wang.
''Not all countries develop at the same pace, but the overall trend is towards open markets.'' NYK Bulkship (USA) president Osamu Miyamoto said: ''The South American market is growing year by year.
''We're not only interested in passenger cars, but high and heavy cargoes as well. South America has big potential.'' The service will be managed by a jointly staffed office in NOSAC's North American headquarters in Baltimore.
It will call at the port twice a month with its three pure car-and truck-carrying vessels.
One call connects Baltimore with ports in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay on South America's east coast.
The other provides service between Baltimore and the west coast of South America's ports in Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, as well as Panama and the Dominican Republic.
