Former Britain Davis Cup captain Joy Tacon competed in a previous incarnation of the JB Group Classic in the 1980s, but these days she is happy just to be watching. Tacon is a former Hong Kong doubles champion and her involvement in the game doesn't end there: 'Sometimes, I nip up to the box and commentate on the Classic for radio station RTHK,' she said.

'I played this tournament for the UK in the 1980s. I'm happy to be watching competition at this level, not competing in it. It's a changed game from when I played. What I like about this tournament is that you've got the best players in the world here. They're relaxed, because this tournament is not all about points. Sometimes they play their best shots, sometimes not, but either way they're not ruled by the fact it is about WTA points.

'They can loosen up, enjoy it. I've never seen Zheng Jie smile so much. The players are visibly more relaxed when they can enjoy the game beyond computer points. One of the things many people like about this tournament is that not only are you so close to the action, you can watch the player's practice. '
