Getting close to the action and having a ball

Watching the ball boys at Wimbledon on television inspired 12-year-old Michelle Lo of the Diocesan Girls School in Jordan to become a 'ball kid' at the JB Group Classic.

'I went to the Hong Kong Tennis Association website (HKTA) and applied. I thought I might not get in, as I'm short. When they accepted me, I felt so lucky!' says Michelle, now into her third year on the job and this year graduated to the demanding net position.

'At first I thought the most challenging thing was rolling the ball properly, and how to give the ball to the players in a suitable place, now I'm at the net I know different. I like the chance to get near the players. My favourite is Roger Federer.'

Alison Leung is in charge of the ball kids, and is always amazed by how well they do.

'As well as an understanding of the game and a real enthusiasm for it, these ball kids all show incredible discipline. They love getting close to the action.'
