Sporty goats spread the message

Asian Games

Four students from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts showed their love for their city and country by designing 'Le Yangyang', the mascots for the 2010 Asian Games. The Games will be held in Guangzhou.

The design, which was chosen by the Asian Games Organising Committee, features five goats. They represent Guangzhou, which is also known as the City of Goats.

The mascots were kept top secret before they were officially launched in April last year.

The four young designers were sent to Long Dong Nursing Homes where they came up with the idea. They were isolated from the outside world for 10 days as they worked on the design.

'We were completely separated from the outside world. Mobile phones, cameras and internet access were not allowed. And we were also not allowed to leave the nursing home. We didn't even know who served our meals,' said Liang Jiawen, one of the designers.

The talented young designers said they were lonely but one thought kept them going - they were doing it for their city and their motherland.

They said in order to create a good design, it was very important to clearly understand the purpose behind it.

'A good design doesn't come from sudden inspiration.

'The creator of Donald Duck didn't just come up with the idea but had to spend a long time preparing for it,' they explained.

The project provided the students with valuable experience and taught them that the life of a designer can be tough sometimes.
