What is it? Ferulic acid is made by plants which use it to protect themselves from the sun, says SkinCeuticals founder Sheldon Pinnell. Plentiful in cereals such as brown rice, whole wheat and oats, there are also small amounts in coffee beans, apples, artichokes, peanuts, oranges and pineapples.

What does it do? It's an antioxidant - it fights free radicals generated by pollution, ultra-violet rays and stress. When combined with other antioxidants that can penetrate the skin, such as vitamins C and E, it is a component used in anti-ageing serums.
