Lee Shau Primary School is located in Tin Shui Wai, an area where more than 80 per cent of residents are on social welfare.
But the school hopes their brand new learning centre will help their students develop into skilled computer users with a bright future.
The Dell Learning Centre is equipped with 50 desktop computers, notebooks, a new server, printers and other equipment donated by the manufacturer. Staff from Dell are also volunteering their time to provide training and technical support.
In their breaks, students as young as six can explore hundreds of online learning games, teaching them about everything from maths to mouse dissection.
The students are also taking part in a new course. By the time they leave primary school they should be able to blog, build websites and use e-mail.
Teachers can already see the benefits of the learning centre. 'The computers let our students go beyond the general curriculum,' says Pelly Ng Pui-yee, curriculum development co-ordinator. 'In the past our lessons were really teacher-oriented, but this programme promotes self-study and exploration.'
She says the students are very receptive to computer learning. 'It's especially useful for learning English, which is our top priority.
