The Paul O'Sullivan-trained Monty broke through at last yesterday in Class Five but not before he tried his best to throw the Russian Pearl Handicap (1,400m) away. Zac Purton gave the five-year-old a dream ride to the home turn and it should have been a simple process from there but Monty was having none of that. 'I didn't want to use the whip on him either,' said Purton. 'I'd hit him when I rode him a couple of runs ago and I told Paul the whip makes him go slower. So today I figured he'd got to the front well enough and I'd try to leave him alone as much as possible and hope he kept going.' Purton has been in great form of late but the run will be halted briefly after the February 4 meeting while he serves a two-day ban for causing interference in the sixth race.
