Monte Cristo surprises French jockey
Olivier Doleuze has been saying for some time that Monte Cristo wants 2,000 metres but after the gelding won at the first time of asking over the metric mile-and-a-quarter in the ninth event, the Frenchman said: 'He's done a good job, I got a bit further back than I thought but he's run on well and got there in time. I've thought he wants 2,000 metres but that was probably right - now I know, not one metre more,' he added with a laugh. Monte Cristo, who started favourite at $34.50, gave trainer Andreas Schutz a race-to-race double, having earlier landed the Stewards' Cup with champion Good Ba Ba, a former Doleuze mount until he was unseated in favour of Christophe Soumillon. 'He's not Good Ba Ba but it's a lot better than no winner at all. I am happy.'
