Welfare group Against Elderly Abuse handled 1,780 cases of abuse against the elderly last year, an increase of 13.4 per cent on 2007. The group said 34.6 per cent of last year's cases involved complaints about people taking property of the elderly and a quarter of the cases involved mental abuse. The group said the increase in the number of cases was partly due to the ageing of the population.
