150 trees felled on sites zoned green belt
About 150 trees have been chopped down in Sai Kung on sites that have not yet been approved for housing development, but planning and lands officials said there was little they could do about it.
The trees near Nam A village, close to Tai Mong Tsai, were cut down about a month ago, nearby residents said.
Most of the felled trees were located on four private sites zoned as green belts, where developers are seeking permission from the Town Planning Board to build small houses.
Some of the felled trees were on government land.
Michael Lee Siu-fung, conservation officer with WWF Hong Kong, visited the sites yesterday. He said some of the felled trees had a diameter the size of about 11/2 men, and that the damage inflicted on the woodland could not be reversed in the short term.
He said it was not uncommon for some developers of small houses to jump the gun by cutting down trees or filling in ponds on the proposed sites, before their building applications were approved.
Green belts were set up to limit such developments, he said, urging the board to carefully consider any application for developments.
