Drink driving a serious problem

I want to express my opinion about the hottest topic in town today - drink driving.

Many drivers do not realise this is a serious problem. Maybe they do not understand the effects of alcohol or overestimate their ability after having a few drinks.

Having a small amount of alcohol is all right but those who drink a lot can become irrational. Such people should never drive.

Many people have died because of drink driving. This is a serious offence and poses a big danger to others.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is selfish and irresponsible behaviour.

I think the government should introduce tougher penalties to deter drink driving.

I hope all the drivers are aware of the importance of a clear mind when they're behind wheels.

Please cherish your life and that of others. Drive safely.

Face adversity with a smile

Some of my friends give up easily when faced with a problem, for example a mathematics question.

I think this is not a good attitude towards learning.

The elderly always say: 'If we are willing to work hard, nothing can challenge us!'

I agree with their view. If we come across adversity, we have to face it with a smile. Olympic diving champion Guo Jingjing suffers from health problems such as poor eyesight, but she never gives up.

You will never succeed unless you try.

Show sympathy to teens on wrong path

Many teenagers join triads these days. They think that once they become a gang member, no one would bully them or take advantage of them.

Also, they think it is cool to be a triad member. This problem is quite serious in Hong Kong.

I think the government should pay more attention to teenagers' problems because they are the future of our society.

Teachers and parents can also guide children along the right path.

Many people think teenagers who become triads are bad, but I don't think so.

Punishment is not the only solution. They should be rehabilitated and allowed to return to society.

Need for rethink on sex education

A newspaper survey of the most important events of last year revealed that students were more interested in the internet photo scandal involving Edison Chen Koon-hei and Gillian Chung Yan-tung than the Sichuan earthquake or the Iraqi war.

This brings to mind an important aspect of growing up. I believe sex education in schools is inadequate.

Most of these lessons focus on contraception and the need to avoid teen pregnancies.

Instead of simply listening to the teacher, students should be involved in more discussions.

If schools are worried about the wrong message being sent, a social worker or a teacher can participate in the activity. Research has shown that most students do not know uploading obscene photos is illegal, although they have done it many times.

What's more, teachers should encourage students to talk about their problems and help them to think in a positive way.

Parents, too, can share their experiences with their children and prepare them for a healthy life.
