Designers polish images with diamonds
With the Lunar New Year behind us, it was back to the business of luxury at the Landmark atrium. On Tuesday night, diamond-peddlers Forevermark hosted a shindig to unveil a new exhibition of ostentation.
The Precious Collection commissioned nine designers and artists to create a piece of diamond jewellery each, accompanied by eight authors who each penned some pithy precious prose for the project.
Hong Kong was represented by designers Barney Cheng Siu-leung, Alan Chan Yau-kin and Wan Bao-bao, but the belle of this ball was Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek who flew in from New York. The African beauty is now moving into handbag design with her own line called Wek 1933, and the chance to dabble with diamonds was irresistible.
It might be the model's first visit to Hong Kong - and she was here for all of three days before flying back for New York Fashion Week activities - but Wek, once a poverty stricken refugee of her country's civil war, understands it's all part of one big global village.
'You have to be in touch whether it's Europe, America or wherever. The countries outside are not so far away.
'We're all so connected globally now.'
Connected? Yes. However, we're not sure how much reality there is to splurging on a 1,000 carat diamond display when the entire world is in debt.
