When Angels & Serpents Dance P.O.D. (CD)

Californian band P.O.D.'s seventh album When Angels & Serpents Dance rocks the body and soul with a number of positive head-bangers, reminding everyone that metal music is not all gloom, death and destruction.

The new album also heralds the return of guitarist Marcos Curiel, whose talent has been sorely missed on the group's last few albums. Several guest artists, including Mike Muir of Suicidal Tendencies, Page Hamilton of Helmet, Cedella and Sharon Marley, are also featured.

The stand-out song is the optimistic It Can't Rain Every Day, which surprisingly hasn't been released as a single.

Although the track deals with sad and disheartening situations, the chorus reminds us that life's not so bad, and tomorrow will be better.

Other tracks that deserve mention are the instrumental Roman Empire, a soft-rock ballad that is reminiscent of Deep Purple, and acoustic rock ballad Tell Me Why, which features orchestral strings and xylophone.

This album has solid guitar work and tracks that span everything from heavy metal to rock ballads, proving the group's versatility. P.O.D. have returned with a fresh perspective, helped by Curiel, who appears to have been a reinvigorating influence.
