Watford's Vicarage Road ground is the unglamorous destination for Guus Hiddink tonight as the globetrotting coach watches his Chelsea team in action for the first time. Hiddink will be aware that there is more glamour in the name of the FA Cup, however, and he will have worked out that this competition offers his best chance of winning silverware.
On paper this is an easy fifth-round tie for Chelsea against a team who are third-bottom in the Championship, though someone may tell the new coach that just under 12 months ago Chelsea were dumped out of the FA Cup at Barnsley, another struggling Championship club (at the time Barnsley were 16th).
For all their recent woes, however, Chelsea's form is not as bad as it has been painted. In all competitions this season, they have been beaten just five times - by Manchester United, Liverpool (twice), Arsenal and Roma. No disgrace there.
The problem for Chelsea has been too many draws, but Watford - with only three clean sheets in 15 games under their latest coach Brendan Rodgers, a protege of Jose Mourinho - will find it hard to match the visitors.
Manchester United may be in more peril at Derby County, who inflicted United's sole defeat in 23 games with a 1-0 home win over the champions in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final last month. A draw might be Derby's best hope this time.
For better value, the FA Cup matches to focus on tonight are two Championship versus Premier League ties - Swansea v Fulham and Sheffield United v Hull City - as the gap between the Premier League and the Championship is significant even with mid-table top-tier teams playing promotion chasers. Fulham and Hull are overpriced as outsiders, and at least merit strong consideration on the handicap.
