'The main symptom is blurring of vision,' says ophthalmologist Christopher Yu.

'Another type, however, causes glare, as the formation of the cataract leads to a scattering of light.

'Yet another type of cataract is where the centre of the lens becomes less hardened ... people retain good vision but it becomes dimmer. These are the three broad types of cataracts.'

The ophthalmologist recommends taking preventative measures such as wearing sunglasses and a hat when outdoors.

According to mayoclinic.com, cataracts typically do not cause any change in an eye's appearance; such changes may point to other problems.
