Drum'n'bass fans are on a roll: Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex will be tearing up the dance floors this weekend for fans still buzzing from DJ Fresh's set two weeks ago.
Scott (right), known as the original 'king of the rollers', is one of the genre's most influential figures, responsible for such seminal tracks as Here Come the Drumz and Shadowboxing. 'I'm a DJ who makes music; always a DJ first,' has been his mantra since 1996.
Born in Coventry, England, Scott was inspired to take up music after seeing US hip hop godfather Grandmaster Flash on television in 1980. He got his first turntable set when he was 14, and then mashed up hip hop and electro tracks for his friends to breakdance to, handing out tapes as 'prescriptions' for his dance junkie pals.
After stints of Detroit techno, Chicago house and New York garage, the British rave scene exploded and he was influenced by DJs such as Grooverider and Carl Cox. Scott has seen Britain's scene evolve from its rave roots to hardcore, jungle and tech-step. He deftly draws on all the phases in his career and somehow masters them all in one unique set.
In his 20s Scott was noticed by drum'n'bass giant Goldie, who helped him get a deal with a label. He later worked with Goldie on Metalheadz, their riposte to the growing jungle scene. Now he DJs around the world and has his own label, 31 Records.
