Trends come and go but the free spirited, easy-to-wear Boho look always seems to creep back into wardrobes season after season.

A modern version of the hippie-chic style of the 1970s, the Boho look has been a big hit in the past few years thanks to trendsetters such as Kate Moss, the Olsen twins and Sienna Miller.

Just when you thought it was off the radar, designers at Chanel and Gucci created their own glamorous and luxe versions for their spring collections.

There are a few essential items needed to create the look, such as a floaty floral print dress, baggy cardigan, embroidered blouse and a hippie bag with details such as studding or tassels.

One thing I like about this trend is the way it flatters most shapes and sizes, while looking pretty and comfortable at the same time.

Take a look at Susan (right), who has gone for a feminine look with a chiffon floral print dress decorated with an embroidered bib front, worn under a double-breasted knit cardigan. The cardigan keeps her warm while toughening up the look, as do the black tights and pair of vintage leather lace-up jazz shoes (which are very 2009).

When I ask to take her photograph she quickly braids her hair. It's a nice touch and finishes off the look.

For a Boho look that is more city-appropriate, take cues from Shirley ( right), who has matched a floaty jersey/chiffon black dress with a dark furry scarf, Chanel leather chain hobo bag and wide belt at the waist to accentuate her curves. Modern details such as exotic print tights and fur-trim ankle boots make her look up-to-date.

Instead of opting for bright colours and prints, she has gone for a more subtle look with Boho-inspired accessories.

Experiment with exotic accessories if you find the head-to-toe look too much.

Choose jewellery made with organic materials, sheepskin Ugg-style boots and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses.

I've seen a cool floral red chiffon dress at Love Girls Market (50B Paterson St, Causeway Bay, tel: 2890 7679) along with a beige faux fur gillet. W closet wears INC (available at i.t, 6-10 Cleveland St, tel: 2504 0025) has some simple white cotton tunics with embroidery.

I've also spotted a grey cotton coat lined with an exotic trim, floaty skirts and knitted bangles at Beams Boy (Shop 27, Silvercord, 30 Canton Road, TST, tel: 2992 0235). Uggs are hard to find, but there are similar styles at Cotton On, and fur-trimmed boots in beige, purple and black at Sole town (1/F, 2-20 Paterson St, Causeway Bay, tel: 2577 8302).
