The campaign to raise funds for the USA Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 came to Hong Kong yesterday.

Two project leaders visited the American Chamber of Commerce offices in Central, and outlined plans for the US$60 million pavilion in an effort to reach potential backers and to publicise sponsorship options.

'This is the single best opportunity for US corporations and institutions to reach Chinese consumers, and they're doing it in the context of an iconic undertaking, parallel to the Beijing Olympics, that is going to be the largest world affair in history,' steering committee chairman Franklin Lavin said after speaking with AmCham members.

Most nations have already committed to the Shanghai event, but the US, under federal law, must privately raise all the money for an exhibition area before it can legally sign on and break ground in June.

Mr Lavin, former US ambassador to Singapore, and USA Pavilion co-chairwoman Ellen Eliasoph said 70 million people were expected to attend the World Expo from May 1 through October 31, 2010.
