South Island boys score runaway track victory

SOUTH Island School scored an overwhelming 346-182 points victory over Kiangsu-Chekiang College to win the boys' overall title at the Inter-school Athletics Championships (Division Three, Hong Kong Area) recently at Wan Chai Sports Ground.

South Island took a 1301/2-115 lead after the heats in the boys' section. On the final day, South Island's boys gave their all as they brought home the Grades A and B titles and the Grade C runners-up trophy. St Louis School was third with 181 points.

South Island's relay teams excelled particularly in the Grade A 4 x 100 m and 4 x 400 m events, taking the gold in both races with winning times of 46.45 seconds and 3 minutes, 47.22 sec respectively.

Simon Green took another gold medal for South Island as he won the coveted Grade A 100 m in 11.54 sec.

Rosaryhill's Hung Fan-kit, however, found winning form in the 200 m, taking the gold in 24.01 sec.

Another outstanding Rosaryhill runner, Ng Yu-lun, scored an easy victory in the Grade A 5,000 m in 17 min 59.78 sec, almost 42 seconds faster than runner-up Yuen Kwun-wan of Man Kiu College.

There was a close fight in the Grade A long jump event. Kwok Chi-shing of Jung Lee College won the gold with a leap of 6.05 m, just 0.01 m better than silver medallist Minn Saing of South Island.

In the girls' section, Kiangsu-Chekiang College took their revenge on South Island, beating the latter by 1991/2-1681/2 points to win the girls' overall championship. St Stephen's Girls' College finished third with 1351/2 points.

Kiangsu-Chekiang's Grade C team defeated South Island to win the title. In Grades A and B Kiangsu-Chekiang finished second to St Stephen's Girls' College and Canossa College.Chu Po-yee (Islamic College) and Cheung Chung-kwan (St Stephen's Girls' College)took the 100 m and 200 m.
