Language Focus

Who's vs Whose

These two similar-sounding words often cause confusion and end up randomly inserted into phrases where they do not belong. 'Who's' is a contraction of 'who is', or less commonly 'who has'. 'Whose' is the possessive of 'who'. The trick is to ask yourself whether you are trying to ask 'who is' (who's) or 'who does it belong to' (whose).

Examples:

Who's: Who's watching the news? Who's coming with me? Who's got my book?

Whose: Whose book is this? Whose side are you on? The girl whose brother always wears a pink cap.
