Study finds extra risk for those with chronic hepatitis B
A Chinese University study has found people with chronic hepatitis B face a higher risk of cirrhosis of the liver if they also have metabolic syndrome, a combination of disorders that increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The researchers investigated 1,466 chronic hepatitis B patients between 2006 and 2008, 188 of whom had the syndrome. Tests found 24 per cent of those with the syndrome also had cirrhosis, a disease that can develop into liver cancer, compared with 11 per cent among those without the syndrome.
Man arrested over hospital flood
Police arrested a 41-year-old man who broke two sprinkler heads at Tuen Mun Hospital, flooding the emergency ward on the second floor. They were called after the man, admitted on Sunday with a suspected mental illness, became emotional and used a hard object to hit the sprinkler heads at about 2.30am yesterday. A spokesman said the ward was flooded ankle-deep.
Vets put down rescued deer
A barking deer was put down about an hour after being rescued by firemen from a drainage channel in Yau Kom Tau, Tsuen Wan.
