Cape No 7 (DVD)

While Cape No 7 shot to the top of the movie charts in Taiwan, locals didn't love the film at the cinema. It's possible that there are too many uniquely Taiwanese elements to touch the average Hongkonger's heart.

The plot is simple. It focuses on chasing dreams and discovering your own talent.

There's a touching love story, too. When the lead female character plans to move away, the lead male says he'll have to leave with her, no matter what his other responsibilities are. How many girls could resist such devotion?

There is a lot of Taiwanese jargon in the movie, which makes it difficult to understand all the jokes and philosophies. But the universal languages of music and scenery are brilliant, charming and effective.

The film was shot in Yilan, a suburban area of Taiwan. It is one of the peaceful and less densely populated regions near the coast. The shots of the sea are so attractive, you'll want to visit as soon as possible.

Cape No 7 was a great success in Taiwan, with many people watching it more than once.

But Hongkongers are less impressed. It's a shame they don't seem to appreciate the importance of promoting one's culture through film.
