Punters have zeroed in on the usual suspects but with plenty of money in their pockets, Brett Prebble's supporters showed greater strength in the opening market salvo for tonight's Jockey Challenge.

Prebble punters have collected four times from the last seven meetings and the prices have been attractive, too, with a best-price $5.50 being offered about the two-time Melbourne champion before his rout of the Challenge at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Whyte's punters, on the other hand, are coming off a six-meeting losing streak but that does not mean their idol is out of form. Whyte has won twice and been second another three times from the last 10 runnings of this fascinating contest.

It's also worthwhile to keep in mind that Whyte wins about 40 per cent of the time, so statistically he is right on the verge of another victory.

Last night, however, it was the Prebble fans who were flaunting their cash.

They snapped up the early price of $3.20, and the Jockey Club oddsmakers were forced to trim the offer quote down to $3.00. To balance the book, the oddsmakers pushed Whyte's quote out from $2.10 to $2.20 by 7pm last night.

Whyte and Prebble dominate the market, taking out 79 per cent between them.

Weichong Marwing was kept safe at $12, while 10-pound claiming apprentices Derek Leung Ka-chun and boom youngster Matthew Chadwick were the next best at $13 each.
