Student blogger shoots to fame over education ministry criticism

Raymond Li

A student of German language who turned blogger has shot to internet fame after claiming that she was kicked out of school for criticising the Ministry of Education.

By last night, some of the entries on the fourth-year Beijing Foreign Studies University student's blog, at http://user.qzone.qq.com/6220087 52blog, had attracted more than 1.5 million visits - a volume of traffic that many veteran bloggers could only hope for.

Labelling the ministry 'a butcher', the student, who adopted the name Chanel after the French fashion house, criticised the ministry for insisting that students meet certain foreign-language requirements to graduate.

That policy denied many people in China the right to further education, promotions and promising jobs, she said.

She ridiculed the ministry by suggesting that Zhao Benshan, a popular mainland comic, would make a better minister of education.

The student claimed she had been approached twice by one of her teachers, who said her view of the ministry amounted to criticism of state authorities and had created trouble for the school's leaders.

'School authorities demanded that I stop updating my blog and delete the entries, or face the consequences,' she wrote.

The Mirror, a Beijing-based newspaper, said the student, Wang Tingting, had failed the band-four German proficiency test, the minimum requirement for a bachelor's degree.

Liu Houguang, head of the Department of Student Affairs at the university, said he could not reveal the identity of the student, but confirmed that the blogger - who went under the name of Chanel - was a student of German language there.

Mr Liu denied that the university had kicked the student out. Her teacher said he had talked to her earlier, and that she had asked to drop out - citing her work commitments and a lack of interest in her studies.

'Her decision to leave the university has nothing to do with what she wrote in her blog, or her blog at all,' he said.

The fuss over the blogger and her accusations against the school and the ministry have underscored growing public discontent over the rigid educational system on the mainland, which is often blamed for lowering the quality of learning and strangling creativity.

Sceptics have questioned the student's motive and dismissed her blog as a public relations tool for a possible career in show business.

Photos on the blog show a leggy blonde student, which may suggest a person more in the spirit of a Japanese pop star than a college student.
