A vote on the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown will be held by University of Hong Kong students next month.

They will be asked whether the central government should 'vindicate the 1989 Democratic Movement and be held accountable for the June 4 massacre' in the April 14-16 poll organised by the students' union.

Union president Ayo Chan Yi-ngok estimated between 1,000 and 2,000 of the university's 10,800 students would vote.

He also expected half of the university's students to attend campus forums on the crackdown during the voting period. He said the union would encourage an exchange of views, with mainland students asked to give their opinions at the forums.

In a statement, the union called on students to vote and 'leave marks in the history of China's democratisation'. It said the outcome of the poll would determine its stance.
