Every designer wants to make a mark in Milan, and budding Hong Kong style maker Chiu Yu-hang is off to a good start. The second-year student at the Hong Kong Design Institute won the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition for young designers in January. Now he's done even better in Italy. Chiu has just won the top prize at Remix, a fur design competition held during industry trade fair La Visionnaire in Milan.
Against a field of 40 fashion creators, Chiu's two-tone mink coat, inspired by the beauty of a wilted tree, wowed the judges with its innovation and architectural shape, narrowly beating competitors from Finland and Germany.
Among the judges were fur industry reps, fashion journalists, American designer Rubin Singer and comedienne Joan Rivers. Normally, Rivers' taste is far from refined, but still, kudos to Chiu.
