A healthy way to net HK$1m

An event which combined sports, sustainable development and charity drew more than 3,000 people to the Tai Po Waterfront Park earlier this month.

The HSBC Pok Oi Cycle for Millions was held on March 15. Participants cycled from the Waterfront Park to Shatin Park to raise funds for Pok Oi Hospital. People from all walks of life took part in the event - the first of its kind in Hong Kong. It raised more than HK$1 million to improve social and community services at the hospital.

Renowned cyclist Wong Kam-po was the ambassador.

'I'm very happy to participate in the event,' Wong said. 'It helps to promote cycling and allows more people to enjoy it. It also raises funds for charity.'

Participants completed the 10km ride along the Tolo Harbour Cycle Trail to Shatin Park, where the closing ceremony was held.

In Sha Tin, there were game counters promoting road safety, bicycle stunt shows and a bicycle exhibition.

Pop stars and professional local athletes also played a part in the event's success. Nine players from Tin Shui Wai Pegasus Football Club were joined by singer Niki Chow and pop group Soler in providing a celebrity touch to the occasion.

'Cycling is a healthy sport. HSBC hopes to promote cycling among the community by supporting the event,' said HSBC chief executive officer, Sandy Flockhart. 'We are also encouraging members of the public to support environmental protection and lead a greener lifestyle.'
