Workers demand subsidy for all

A group of low-income workers, led by the Confederation of Trade Unions, petitioned outside the residence of Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah yesterday, demanding the government extend a transport subsidy scheme to cover all working-class families. They want the scheme, which covers only those living in some districts, to be extended to all eligible workers.

Arrest for drink-driving

A 36-year-old driver was arrested for drink-driving on the Yuen Long Highway at about 7am yesterday. Police said officers spotted a car stopped along the highway and asked the driver to take a breath test. The driver failed the test and was arrested on the spot.

Police foil suicide attempt

A 27-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself into the Lam Tsuen River in Tai Po at 3.15am. A teenager spotted the man in the water and called the police, who rescued him and took him to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. The man said he was feeling frustrated because he thought his family did not care about him.

Two injured in collision

A taxi driver and a female passenger in a light goods vehicle were injured when the vehicle and the taxi collided on the Canal Road Flyover in Wan Chai at about 6am. They were both taken to Ruttonjee Hospital. The taxi driver and the van driver both passed breath tests.

Fatal leap at Hung Hom

A 31-year-old woman jumped to her death in Lok Man Sun Tsuen, Hung Hom, at 7am. The woman was found unconscious and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was certified dead. The woman had been chronically ill. Police said the case was not suspicious.

Driver hurt as vehicle overturns

A 20-year-old driver was injured when his light goods vehicle crashed into a railing and overturned on Tai Ho Road, Tsuen Wan, at 6.30am. The driver was taken to Yan Chai Hospital.
