Top dog in sausage-eating contest plans to tone up for his next bout

It was no guts, no glory at Big Dog's hot-dog-eating finals on Friday night in LKF. After last week's semi-finals, four contenders were left to battle it out in the dog-eat-dog spectacle and the drama was palpable. After stuffing in as many German sausages and buns as possible in five minutes, the two top gluttons ended up tied at 10 dogs each. As a tie-breaker, the two super-stomachs then had to consume four more dogs as quickly as possible after a three-minute break.

The excitement and tension were contagious - not to mention the indigestion. In the end, Chiu Sou-sang (second from left) was declared the big dog. For his effort, he took home a championship belt and HK$2,000 worth of food vouchers from the Duke's Group of eateries.

'It was really close. I didn't expect to eat four extra hot dogs,' Chiu said afterwards. 'But I love hot dogs. I can never get enough, but eating them wasn't an easy task. You have to drink a lot of water if you want to eat faster, but too much water fills you up quickly.'

A regular at eating contests, Chiu admitted he wasn't satisfied with his performance. 'I need to lose some weight for the next competition. Because if you have too much fat in your stomach, it's very hard to make room for the food. I exercise a lot, jogging and swimming. It's very important. I think food-eating competitions are a kind of sport.'
