Killer of mother sent to psychiatric centre

The son of a former managing director of China Life Insurance was ordered yesterday to be detained in a psychiatric centre for an indefinite period for killing his mother during a psychotic episode.

Mr Justice Michael McMahon in the Court of First Instance imposed a hospital order on Wang Zhejun, 37, a former executive at a Japanese insurance firm, who had been found not guilty of the murder by reason of insanity.

Wang was found to have been suffering from a severe form of paranoid schizophrenia when he killed his mother, Zhan Qiuxia, by striking her more than 150 times on the head and neck with a chopper in his luxury home on the 27th floor of Star Crest in Wan Chai on February 25 last year.

He later told police he believed she was a Japanese spy who had been sent to kill him.

Wang is the son of Wang Xianzhang, a former managing director of China Life Insurance.

On March 17, Mr Justice McMahon adjourned the case until yesterday for discussion with prosecutor Dee Crebbin and defence barrister Michael Arthur on matters relating to the imposition of a hospital order.

Having sought opinion from four psychiatrists, the court heard yesterday that a hospital order for an indefinite period was recommended for Wang's benefit and protection of the public.

On the night of February 25, Zhan was found lying dead in a pool of blood on the bedroom floor of Wang's apartment.

Wang was arrested by police officers outside the flat that night.

The court heard that he was muttering to himself, wearing only red underpants but had donned five upper garments. Also, he was not wearing shoes.

His right eye had been glued shut. He later told a psychiatrist that he believed a camera had been installed in the eye to transmit images to Japanese agents.

Psychiatrist Dominic Lee Tak-shing testified that Wang had suffered severe psychotic symptoms.
