Five-year-old boy is eighth EV-71 case this year

A five-year-old boy was found with enterovirus-71 (EV-71) infection, bringing the total of EV-71 cases this year to eight. A spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection said the boy had suffered from oral ulcers and rashes on his hands and feet since March 12. He had been receiving treatment from a private doctor and had not been admitted to hospital. His condition was stable. None of the family members who had had contact with the boy showed symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease. Earlier, a five-year-old boy from the same kindergarten was also confirmed to have an EV-71 infection. Four other children who attend the same school had developed hand, foot and mouth disease, and all are in a stable condition.
