The Brawn diffuser. Sounds like a shaver, and to an extent I guess it is - it shaves half a second off a F1 lap.

What an amazing race in Melbourne and what a prospect this weekend in Malaysia. Through a large sprinkling of ingenuity and bucketfuls of guts in interpreting the rules, the new kids on the block won their first race. The cars may be ugly, but the win for Brawn GP was a beautiful thing and a vindication of Ross Brawn as a genius.

It also shows the effect of the lack of testing this season as the sport looks to cut costs. The late arrival of Brawn GP from the ashes of Honda didn't matter one jot. The majority of the hard work to make this car a world-beater happened while the Japanese were still in control.

When Ross Brawn arrived at Honda he took one look at last years car and decided it was rubbish. The 2008 season was a write off, and while Button and Barrichello struggled through the year, Brawn was already concentrating on this season's design.

It was a decision that has paid off in spades and underlines how some middle-ranking teams have been able to get a jump on the big boys thanks to paying early attention to the new rules.

McLaren, by contrast, have struggled to come to terms with the new season. The new team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, has admitted McLaren had to put all their efforts into securing the drivers' championship last year.

That meant very little focus on developing a car for this year and certainly little time on the track.
