If Hongkongers missed out during the mad scramble for heavily discounted electronic products at the fair in Sham Shui Po in December, here is your second chance.

A 12-day computer fair opened yesterday at the MegaBox shopping centre in Kowloon Bay. Set up on nine floors of the 18-storey centre, the fair has more than 180 booths from about 100 exhibitors, selling laptops, printers, monitors, memory cards and other computer-related accessories.

The organiser, the Chamber of Hong Kong Computer Industry, said it was the first time that the fair was being held indoors. Chamber chairman Leung Ding-kau said it hoped the fair would strengthen the industry and benefit dining and entertainment businesses in the mall.

Mr Leung expected the fair, which ends on April 13, to attract at least 450,000 visitors and generate sales of more than HK$250 million.

In December, nearly half a million people jammed the narrow streets of Sham Shui Po to buy gadgets at what exhibitors described as 'tsunami prices'. Many of the products were sold at half price.

The four-day fair raked in HK$230 million.

However, exhibitors said that this time the discounts would be smaller.

Pang Wai-shing, director of A-Grade Technology, which sells gadgets such as memory sticks and card readers, said discounts offered would be about 10 to 15 per cent.

A manager of Centralfield Computer, a Mr Wong, said his company would offer a 10 per cent discount on laptops.

The exhibitors said suppliers offered heavily discounted products at the last fair because they wanted to clear the stock in the face of the financial meltdown.

However, Mr Pang said that the suppliers had raised the prices again in recent months leaving little room for heavy discounts.
