'Modern Mogul' couturiers make good case for India as motherland of bling

In between slumdogs, there are millionaires. That's the market Indian designers Arjun and Anjalee Kapoor (pictured) cater to with their bedazzled and bejewelled modern Mogul couture. The Delhi-based couple's empire expansion began with a shop in New York and now they've launched their own studio within the boutique Sanskrit, and hosted an opening reception on Wednesday. 'We've been coming to Hong Kong the last four years and we serve a lot of the Indian community. There are no Indian weddings without our garments,' boasted Anjalee Kapoor - who designs the clothes while husband Arjun takes care of the books. 'That was why we felt it made sense to have a permanent place here. And I know Komal [Mirchandani, Sanskrit's owner] will handle the brand very well.'

The glittery corner, next to the sparkly clutches section, certainly make a good case for India as the motherland of bling. Although the pair may not be household names here, they are major operators in Delhi, which is to Indian fashion what Mumbai's Bollywood is for movies. But their renown is spreading. 'I was really surprised that a whole lot of Chinese clients also made appointments with me these few days here. Frankly, I wasn't prepared for that, but I am super-excited. They love the ornamentation.'
