Goodbye and thank you, Snowball, you adorable (and occasionally naughty) mutt
with Alex Lo
Puppies are devilish creatures. One look into their mischievous, watery eyes and you are smitten for life. They are little children trapped inside a dog's body - an awful biotech experiment engineered by an evil genius with too much time on his hands and a wicked sense of humour.
Snowball McGregor (left) and his sister Snowflake (right) came into our household quite uninvited shortly after Christmas, and promptly made themselves at home. It was supposed to be for just one night but like many an expat, McGregor, a.k.a. Ah Mac, decided to stay for the long haul.
They came from a New Territories village, both white with light-yellow patches. Snowflake looked exactly like a tong kau, a local mutt, but Snowball McGregor had the head of a Scottish terrier, yet with a body that matched Snowflake's. Their mother was also a tong kau, so we imagined daddy was a Scottish terrier who got naughty one night and had his way with mum - hence the name we gave Snowball.
Snowball was oversexed, probably taking after his dad. Barely three months old and he already had a habit of turning my legs and the dining table into potential mates with his naughty doggy-style exercises.
The two pups stole our hearts. Then, somehow, Snowball suffered massive liver damage, God knows why. He fought a valiant fight and is now in the Happy Hunting Ground.
We had almost three months of unadulterated joy together. Snowball knows that he will always remain in our hearts.
