The role of artificial flowers in fung shui is a controversial topic. Some masters feel that since they were not present when classical fung shui principles were established, they should not be considered at all. Then there are those who feel that artificial flowers lack life force, or 'chi', and should be avoided at all costs.

One thing is for certain, synthetic flowers should not be used in traditional fung shui formulas to stimulate romance by simulating the wood energy in an environ-ment. When trying to enhance your love life, there is no substitute for fresh-cut flowers. Even fake flowers that are made of wood should be discounted. A specific number of fresh flowers can be placed in the appropriate sector of a home based on the occupant's birth data. Wilting flowers should always be replaced.

Synthetic flowers do not exert any negative effects but they should always be kept clean. If they are damaged or if their colour has faded, they should be discarded.

It is generally agreed that neither preserved nor shrivelled flowers (including wedding bouquets) are considered to have positive energy and they should not be displayed within your home. Images of dead flowers in print form will also increase yin energy, leading to increased incidences of melancholia and depression.
