More than 400 protesters from Shanwei in Guangdong returned home yesterday after holding a seven-hour demonstration in Hong Kong waters.

All the petitioners were residents from Gangkou village in Lufeng county's Jieshi township, and involved in an ongoing feud with neighbouring Meitian village, said the Shanwei municipal government information office. The villages had been arguing about a road works project.

It said the villagers decided to sail to Hong Kong in a bid to attract media attention over their dissatisfaction with official intercession in their land dispute with Meitian village.

Some 25 fishing boats decked with banners reading 'equal justice under law' entered Hong Kong waters on Saturday morning, but left under police advice.
