Apple Daily received a threatening parcel containing a newspaper advertisement for the latest film starring Edison Chen Koon-hei and explosive powder yesterday.
In the parcel, addressed to the paper at its headquarters in Tseung Kwan O, a lighter, an advertisement for the thriller The Sniper published on page C19 of the paper on Thursday, and some silvery powder in a 4cm-long plastic bottle was found.
The newspaper called police at 2.40pm and a Fire Services Department hazardous materials vehicle and bomb squad officers attended the scene. Police said last night the powder was a low-grade explosive.
On March 12, a warning letter containing a cartridge was received at the paper's headquarters. Sent from New York, it said Chen should not appear at any public or promotional events from April 4. It said Chen should take the warning seriously, or his personal safety would be at risk.
