Police in protective gear broke into a Chai Wan flat shortly after midnight yesterday to subdue a 45-year-old man armed with a knife and wooden baton who had locked himself in the flat with his wife, 36, and son, 15. The son called police when the man threatened to injure his wife during a dispute. The man was arrested for assaulting police, criminal intimidation and possession of an offensive weapon. His wife and son were unhurt. Two officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at Eastern Hospital.

Bid to stave off SoHo renewal

Four SoHo property owners are asking town planners to save their refurbished homes and offices from an imminent redevelopment plan. They own nine out of 33 flats on one of three sites earmarked for redevelopment in the Urban Renewal Authority's plans for Staunton Street and Wing Lee Street. In their recent application to the Town Planning Board, Dare Koslow and three other owners have asked the board to set a maximum building height of seven storeys for the site, which would stop the authority from building a planned 28-storey apartment block on it.

Morning swim ends in death

A woman drowned at Repulse Bay Beach. A man, 34, called police at about 5am after he realised his friend had disappeared while swimming. Police officers found the woman, 43, floating off the beach.
