Hong Kong physics student wins master's scholarship

A Hong Kong University of Science and Technology master of philosophy student in physics has won a full scholarship from the Perimeter Scholars International programme. Tsui Lok-man is the only candidate from Hong Kong to win a full scholarship for the 10-month master's degree programme jointly organised by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. He was among 24 students in 15 countries who beat 200 applicants. The programme, to start in August, aims to nurture budding physicists to become researchers in theoretical physics.

Doctor urged to complete training course after losing patients' data

An eye doctor at United Christian Hospital received a warning letter and has been urged to complete a training course after she lost a USB flash drive that contained 47 patients' names, identity card numbers, genders, ages and operation records. An investigation showed the doctor had failed to comply with data-security guidelines, the hospital said yesterday. A training course has been designed to teach staff how to keep patients' data safe when using removable electronic storage devices. Meanwhile, the Hospital Authority's Kowloon East cluster has conducted a review of training and guidelines, to strengthen the monitoring of staff who use such storage devices.

Developer takes fight for residential towers to court

A developer is seeking to overturn a Building Authority decision not to grant the firm permission to build residential towers on a site at Lower and Upper Kai Yuen Lane in North Point. Bestview International Development lodged a judicial review application in the High Court on Friday. The writ says the plans for the residential development have been rejected four times since 2006, as they did not include any car parking spaces or loading and unloading facilities.

Policeman injured as his motorcycle and a car collide

A policeman was injured when his motorcycle collided with a car around noon along Ting Kok Road near Luk Mei Tsuen in Tai Po yesterday. The accident occurred when the car slowed to turn right. The 29-year-old policeman's left hand and abdomen were injured. He was conscious when taken to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital for treatment.
