Top tips: grease out

Marjory Tam, a pharmacist at Vichy skincare, explains how to deal with excessively oily skin:

'Oil-absorbing sheets temporarily remove sebum on the skin, but they do not stop the excess secretion of grease at the root of the sebaceous glands, so they're effective only in the short term.

'The sudden removal of sebum by the oil-absorbing sheets sends a signal to the glands to produce more. Oily/combination skin needs skincare with sebum-control ingredients that act on the pores and sebaceous gland to reduce the secretion of sebum.

'Sebum secretion peaks at night and it takes 10-12 hours for the oil to appear, so an oily shine in the afternoon is from secretion at night. That's why it's important to use oil-control night creams. To reduce shininess, advanced skincare uses tiny crystal beams called covabeads to absorb excess sebum.'
