More than 280 students and staff from the University of Hong Kong went on a night hike to have fun and raise funds for Sowers Action.

The Joint Hall Fund-raising Night Hiking event was held on April 10 by the university's Joint Hall Social Service Group.

According to organiser Shek Yuk-fung, a third-year Chinese history student, the theme of the project was 'Road to Light'.

More than HK$35,000 was raised through the hike and all donations will go to the Sowers Action Young Ambassador programme.

This project trains young people as ambassadors to visit and help poor students in rural areas on the mainland.

Mr Shek said they chose hiking at night because it matched their theme. They started at 1.30am, walking from Ho Tim Hall at the university to Victoria Peak. They arrived at their destination at sunrise.

'The theme implies we are on a dark road now and walking to a brighter future,' he said.

'Walking up hills at night can let participants experience the life of poor students on the mainland - getting up at midnight and walking for a few hours to school every day.'

Mr Shek took part in the hike. He said the route was not difficult, with few slopes and mostly flat roads. In addition, the morning air at the peak was refreshing and eased all their tension and tiredness.

'Hiking in the dark is a good experience. When we arrived at the peak, the sky was getting brighter, which was really fulfilling and exciting,' he said.

However, he said it was a pity that thick cloud blocked the view of the sun rising.

Mr Shek said it was their first large community-based project. He hoped their effort could do a little to help the poor in the community to get through hard times.
