Enlighten up

Yvonne Lai

Most of us consider enlightenment the lot of Zen masters and yogis but Edinburgh- and Harvard-trained general physician Dr Sue Jamieson will tell you differently in her new book, Light in Life.

'Science shows that we are all beings of light, not only in the sense that our fuel for life [food] comes directly or indirectly [through photosynthesis] from sunlight but that our bodies are made of the same stuff in the form of electromagnetic energy,' says Jamieson. 'I'm devoted to helping people connect with the light in themselves.'

Through her 20 years of practicing of modern medicine, the founder of Hong Kong wellness centre Holistic Central has come to the belief that connecting with our essential nature of light is not only possible but vital for our health and well-being.

Part personal account of discovery, part DIY-wellness manual, Light in Life: Medical to Mystical has something for everyone, appealing equally to a respect for science and the creative compass. Jamieson's conversational and light-hearted writing moves with ease from ideas on DNA and the mechanics of human sight to the healing systems of colour, chakra and qigong, and is illustrated with case studies.

Most of us 'mal-illuminated' working stiffs will appreciate the short and simple self-healing and meditation exercises peppered throughout the book. There's one to combat jetlag, one for intestinal troubles, many for a general tune-up - all of which can be done at home, outdoors or in the office. The goal is to ready yourself to receive, hold and share as much light as possible, fulfilling your true potential as a human being; and who wouldn't want that?

If your partner isn't convinced you haven't lost the plot, you can always bring her or him to one of Jamieson's workshops for a guided tour of light. The next two will be held on: May 4, from 7pm to 9pm (NetworkCare Hong Kong, 8A Winning Centre, 46 Wyndham Street, Central, tel: 2868 9792) and May 18, from 7pm to 9pm (Holistic Central, 16/F, Hing Wai Building, 36 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2523 8044). Each workshop costs HK$450 per person.
