Sevens fever sweeps couple off their feet

AS the annual weekend of scrambling and streaking (aka the Rugby Sevens) approaches, the excitement seems to be reaching fever pitch.

Why, approaching Kai Tak yesterday afternoon from Manila on a Cathay flight, Keeping Posted was amused to hear the pilot greeting a group of rugby fans who were flying in for the Cathay Pacific-Hongkong Bank sponsored event.

They weren't the only ones. We know of another party of 500 enthusiasts who've come in from England to help dispose of the 225,000 litres of beer that will be on offer over the two days.

But some, we fear, are getting carried away for their own good.

Take Ian Kingsford who arrived with the English fans and, in an act of utmost political correctness, brought his girlfriend Julia Humphries along.

It was probably meant to be rugby for him and shopping for her. But now, obviously overcome by the romance of this town, they have just booked a date at the City Hall to tie the knot.

We can almost hear Ian pleading: ''But get me to the Sevens on time.''
