Black, white and uplifting

After a number of panda animations and documentaries, there is finally a live-action panda feature film. Disney's Trail of the Panda not only stars cuddly mammals but also acclaimed kid actor Daichi Harashima. Together, the pair tell a heart-warming story of love and courage.

Nine-year-old Xiaolu (Harashima) refuses to talk after losing his parents in a tragic fire. But he finds new hope when a panda cub stumbles into his life. Just like the boy, the cub Pang-pang was separated from its parents. While helping Pang-pang escape the relentless panda hunters, Xiaolu's once-closed heart is reopened by the new friendship. Xiaolu realises he must help his little panda friend find his mother.

You'll be disappointed if you expect the national treasures to act - they don't. But the cubs do what they are best at - fooling around, looking cute and innocent. Scenes of the budding friendships are truly amazing - it's hard not to feel jealous of Harashima's close encounter with the cub as it constantly hugs him and even licks his face.

The movie was filmed in the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan before last year's earthquake. The gentle, tranquilising background music by Oscar-winner Richard Pryke adds depth to the quiet movie. A superb kid actor, adorable panda, wonderful scenery and beautiful score make an otherwise predictable film worthwhile.
